WHIS modules and supervision

There are two foundational training streams every new should know about.

1. The WHIS practice modules — your core curriculum

The & programme is organised around six practice areas that map to the four competency domains. Most lessons in this academy reference one or more of them:

ModulePractice areaWhat it covers
1Engagement & connectionListening, "what matters to you?", building rapport
2Personalised care planning, activation, health literacy, behaviour change
3Partnerships & workingBuilding partnerships across sectors
4Community developmentAsset mapping, , accessibility, personalised funding routes
5SafeguardingStatutory duty (per jurisdiction), thresholds, escalation
6Records & impactRecord-keeping, validated wellbeing measures, demonstrating impact

You can complete the modules in any order. Many do them alongside their first weeks in role — the practical application gives the training context.

2. Your local mandatory and statutory training

Beyond the modules, you will need:

  • Mandatory and statutory training required in your jurisdiction — safeguarding, confidentiality, info governance, lone working, , health and safety, domestic abuse, capacity-to-consent awareness, emotional resilience, social welfare awareness, cultural competence
  • Local training — many local authorities or community education providers run training relevant to that also helps you build cross-sector relationships
  • Systems training — your case management system, outcome measurement tools, and reporting platforms.

How to keep track

Use your Portfolio of Evidence (the Academy Reflection and Observation tools) to record what you have done, what you learned, and what's next. Bring it to supervision.
